NYJO is more than just a jazz orchestra. NYJO performs constantly throughout the year at public and private engagements within the UK and abroad.
See the Gig Calendar for further details about the NYJO ensembles upcoming performances.
NYJO Jazz Orchestra
The NYJO flagship 24-piece ensemble has helped launch the careers of many of the UK’s most renowned musicians, including Guy Barker, Amy Winehouse, Mark Nightingale, Laura Jurd and Gwilym Simcock, as well as Dave Arch (leader of the Strictly Come Dancing band) and most of his band members, Martin Koch (musical supervisor for the London Olympics and Paralympics), and many other stalwarts of musicals, films and the studio.
Recent highlights of the flagship band’s concert diary include a yearly residency at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, performing with Gregory Porter at Buckingham Palace, a major European tour with the German (BuJazzO) and Dutch (NJJO) National Youth Jazz Orchestras, a televised performance at the BBC Proms and repeat appearances at the EFG London Jazz Festival. NYJO celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015 and released a critically-acclaimed double album NYJO FIFTY.
NYJO 18-Piece Big Band
The 18-piece band is presented as a practical solution where the venue size cannot accommodate the full 24-piece orchestra. The slightly smaller lineup is able to perform much of the Jazz Orchestra’s repertoire, but really shines in its own right as a specialist in the later big band sound of the 1940s and 50s.
The 18-piece is made up of (nearly) all the same excellent musicians from the Jazz Orchestra and is led by the NYJO Artistic Director Mark Armstrong.
The NYJO Nonet consists of the very best past and present members of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Led by saxophonist Chris Whiter, the Nonet is a showcase for some of the most talented young jazz musicians working in the UK, all of whom have progressed through the NYJO family.
With a focus on small-group improvisation, it plays compositions and arrangements by current and ex-members of NYJO and has established a reputation for performing with consummate skill, inspired soloists and wonderful ‘cool-school’ arrangements.
The standard lineup for the Nonet is:
Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums and Vocal
Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Ambassadors and more
The smaller ensembles are a bijou showcase for some of the best up-and-coming young musicians the industry, stepping out of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra’s 24-piece ensemble setting to bring you the brilliance of the big band on an intimate scale.
Our usual programmes bring together a kaleidoscope of jazz classics and traditional jazz standards, performed for your entertainment by a selection of NYJO’s hugely talented soloists.
The standard lineup for a small ensemble is a rhythm section of Piano, Bass and Drums with soloists from the brass and woodwind sections and optional singers.
NYJO is happy to reshape any ensemble suitable for your venue and event. Please get in touch with out Bookings Manager for more information.
