New Music Commissions
You can support the commissioning of a leading female jazz composer to write a new big band chart for the NYJO Virtual Academy, created in the wake of Covid-19.
NYJO will develop the Virtual Academy further by investing in new commissions and workshops to accommodate the growing number of ambitious young jazz artists. This will see NYJO work with its 15-strong cohort of expert educators and commission six new pieces by female composers. Alongside this, NYJO will also create 25 new resource packs; develop eight new videos for specific instruments and produce 16 new charts for NYJO Minus One. This continued development of the Virtual Academy is key to NYJO’s approach to delivering high-quality accessible jazz education, and to supporting employment and continued professional development within the sector.
25% of our Academy students attend for free. You can help us to provide these opportunities by making a gift to underwrite tuition fees to talented students in financial need.
Our Academies are the home of our regular, local jazz education activities in London and in areas where there is a lack of existing cultural engagement. Each Academy is custom designed to meet local needs, providing skills development workshops and performance opportunities for students and Continuing Professional Development for local teachers.
You can help us to provide access to jazz music by supporting a regular two-year creative music making workshop for children in an area of little cultural provision.
NYJO’s Learning and Participation Programme is delivered in partnership with educational partners and Music Education Hubs, giving young people a chance to develop musical skills, meet others, hear inspiring musicians, and perform. This work allows more people to benefit from jazz and reduces isolation, improves wellbeing, and enhances team-building skills.
