Scottish trumpet player Christos Stylianides is an improvising musician and composer currently based in London. Growing up just outside of Glasgow in a non-musical family, he first picked up the instrument at 11 years old. Since then he has attended and graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire BMus (Hons) Jazz Course, where he studied with a host of musicians including John O’Gallagher, Percy Pursglove, Steve Fishwick, Mike Williams and many others. During this time Christos formed his own group comprised of some of his favourite musicians and close friends (the Christos Stylianides quintet/CSV). He describes this group as “one which focuses on the contemporary while still being able to draw from the tradition of improvised music. With an emphasis on original music, the band drifts between extremes of explosive high energy improvisation and subtler moments of vulnerability, while leaving space for each members individual voice to come through and shape the music”. Since graduating from Birmingham, Christos was offered a place on the MMus Jazz Course at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of music and Dance in London, where he is currently in his first last year of study. He continues to work as a freelance musician around the city and beyond, recently spending some time in playing in Europe.
