Born in Plymouth, into a musical family alongside five older siblings, Matt began his journey in music at the age of six, where he started to learn the cornet with his father. At aged thirteen, he discovered the bass and studied with Michael Bolton for five years and Clare Garton-Sprenger for two years.

Matt is now a double and electric bass player, currently studying a Bachelor of Music in Jazz at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He is fortunate enough to be taught by Mark Hodgson, Arnie Somogyi (both for jazz), Julian Atkinson and Tom Martin (both for classical).

Matt has performed at the Vortex, Kings Place, Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Town and Symphony Halls, Montreux, Vienne and Nišville Jazz Festivals. Currently, he is a sideman with various small ensembles such as the Mike Anning Quartet, Ashton Smith Quartet, Tephra and has experience with the Birmingham Jazz Orchestra, Fat Chops Big Band, and Welsh Musical Theatre Orchestra.

The Bass Chair is supported by Art Mead.
