Andy was born in Islington and was interested in music from an early age. He studied at the Trinity College of Music and played saxophone in NYJO during the late 80s/early 90s before embarking on a professional music career.

An exceptionally gifted jazz musician, Andy is also skilled in performance, composition and arranging. He plays all the flutes, all the saxophones and clarinet and currently leads groups of both jazz and classical persuasions. In addition, he writes commissioned works and prepares manuscripts for his arranging/composing/transcribing business ALP Music.

Over the years Andy has performed and recorded with many singers including Shirley Bassey, Jessye Norman, Paul McCartney, Salena Jones, Elvis Costello, Georgie Fame, Suzi Quattro, Zoot Money, Elaine Delmar, Helen Shapiro, Madeline Bell and Patty Austin.

He has also worked alongside or supported many of the great jazz musicians, including Abdulla Ibrahim (Dollar Brand), Freddie Hubbard, Ed Thigpen, Jiggs Whigham, Billy Cobham, Ronnie Scott, Ken Peplowski, Scott Hamilton, Pepper Adams, Kenny Baker, Humphrey Lyttelton, John Dankworth and Cleo Laine.

Andy has at various times been a member of the Louie Bellson Octet and Big Band, Indo-Jazz Fusions, run by Johnny Mayer, the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow City Ballet, the Ted Heath/Don Lusher Big Band, the BBC Big Band, Bert Kaempfert’s Orchestra, the Stan Tracey Big Band/Septet/Octet and the John and Alec Dankworth Generation Big Band amongst many others.

During his career Andy has won several awards, including the Marty Paich Arranging Award, the John Dankworth Soloist Award, the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Jazz Medal and the British Jazz Awards for Jazz Flute.

He now works with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) as a consultant specialising in developing the jazz syllabus for future examinations. He has also taught in many schools and colleges and has been a professor at the Royal College of Music since 2004.
