At the age of 14 he studied at Trinity College of Music, followed respectively by Leeds College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He went on to occupy the drum chair in NYJO for nine years, on and off, performing all over the country, as well as appearing several times at Ronnie Scott’s.

Playing drums also gave him an opportunity to travel the world – he has toured Argentina with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, played in The Plovdiv Jazz Festival in Bulgaria and visits Pomos in Cyprus every year, playing in the Paradise Jazz Festival with Anita Wardell.

Darren played in Hyde Park with Ladysmith Black Mambazo as part of the live BBC1 broadcast for the Queens’ Golden Jubilee celebrations, working with George Martin and Hollywood composer Michael Kamen. He has also performed with Pop Idols Will Young, Gareth Gates and Zoë Birkhill in Covent Garden and has drummed for Abbamania at The Strand Theatre.

A much-sought after drummer, Darren has worked with some of the top names in the UK jazz world such as Clare Teal, Sax Appeal, Don Weller, Jim Mullen and Sarah Ellen Hughes. He has also performed with the house band at Ronnie Scott’s and has numerous film and television soundtracks to his credit.

He is professor of jazz drums at the Purcell School of Music and has taught at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Academy of Music and Wavendon Summer Schools. He is also a voice actor, with his own studio in West London, and he provides voice-overs for cartoon, films and advertisements for clients all over the world.
