NYJO Presents… NYJX | Ronnie Scott’s
November 1 @ 8:30 pm – 10:30 pm
NYJO Presents was built to showcase up and coming talent from across the UK jazz scene during the national lockdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This grassroots, bottom-up platform was there for plural creative voices to continue to express themselves at the start of their careers.
The Jazz Exchange (JX) are a distinctive, new ensemble that brings together emerging talent from across the UK. Mentored by Orphy Robinson MBE, this unconventional collective of prodigious talent brings a unique body of original material, largely developed during – and influenced by – the nationwide lockdowns as a result of the ongoing pandemic. Expect an elaborate sonic patchwork consisting of strings, reeds, drums, and waves of modular synthesis.
Orphy Robinson MBE
One of the major figures in the jazz scene, Orphy has made invaluable contributions to music in the UK and around the world, he has released records on Blue Note and played with artists like Courtney Pine, Don Cherry and Nigel Kennedy. Orphy has spent a big part of his career working in a variety of music and education projects at The Hackney Empire, Vortex jazz club, Warriors International and most recently, as both the Chair of the Jazz Executive committee and board-member of the Ivors Academy.
“It is a privilege to be leading the NYJO Jazz Exchange. This exciting new project will provide progressive professional opportunities to those who don’t identify with traditional musical education routes. As a young player, I would have benefited enormously from this scheme. The jazz scene is constantly changing, and it’s important that NYJO does too.”Orphy Robinson MBE
