NYJO, BuJazzO and NJJO – Three Nations Under One Groove
September 23 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Three big bands, three different countries, three days of intensive rehearsal, four gig venues and over 70 of the most promising young European jazz musicians about to burst onto the scene. These are the ingredients for the continental leg of NYJO’s collaboration with the German Bundesjazzorchester (BuJazzO) and the Dutch Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (NJJO), and they make for a joyous evening of music-making.
The concept of the project – which began as the ‘Freedom and Friendship’ collaboration between just NYJO and BuJazzO in 2014 – is to demonstrate that jazz is a universal language spoken by young musicians across Europe, with the variety of colours and ‘jazz dialects’ used by all three nations coming together to add nuance and conversation to the repertoire that many big bands play. The bands will mix and join to perform new and exisiting repertoire, some set pieces that require larger forces and some works commissioned specially for the project by the MDs Mark Armstrong, Jiggs Whigham and Johan Plomp.
