Amy Winehouse: A Celebration of Her Life & Music | Band on the Wall, Manchester
11th February 2022 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
NYJO Celebrates Amy
NYJO alumna Amy Winehouse is undoubtably one of the greatest musical talents to come out of the UK. Her unmistakable character, vocal dexterity and masterful songwriting made her a pop icon. Her tragic passing makes her one of the most sorely missed artists in recent memory. Now, ten years on, her music still shines, undiminished, in all its defiant brilliance. This concert series celebrates Amy’s enduring legacy, reimagining hits and revisiting early works she sang with the 24-piece National Youth Jazz Orchestra as a promising 16-year-old singer, back in 2000. We aim to honour her life, and her work, with a performance that fans of big band jazz, and Amy obsessives will enjoy together, as one.
Band on the Wall
Band on the Wall has been a cornerstone of Manchester’s thriving music and cultural landscape for two centuries. Its mission is to promote equality and diversity through music and to bring leading artists from around the world to the stage.
The name harks back to the building’s days as The George and Dragon pub in the early 20th Century. Regulars would affectionately refer to the ‘Band on the Wall’ as the place where house musicians quite literally played on a stage halfway up the back wall to make room in the busy pub.
