Here we go!

1986

NYJO is 21 and there’s a 21st Birthday Party at the place where it all started, The Marquee Club Wardour Street London.

And during 1985 and 1986 tracks are recorded for the next LP With an Open Mind.

 1987

In 1987 Britain was on the threshold of a new era in TV, the launch of the first Europe Wide Satellite TV channel! It’s all very familiar, yet very strange!

NYJO Archive 1986 – 1995

NYJO 1987 SuperChannel 1 – Dawn of a new age!

NYJO 1987 SuperChannel 2 – the VIP arrives!

NYJO 1987 SuperChannel 3 – More Europhoria

NYJO 1987 SuperChannel 4 – Closeout of Britain’s first night of Satellite TV!

NYJO Archive 1986 – 1995

And from that madness NYJO went on to release this:

A brilliant combination of talents and genres! And they took it to The Proms

And this! The second vocal Album on the BBC label. Lorraine Craig’s beautiful Album contains ‘Where is the Music?’ perhaps one of the most well known NYJO tracks, not least because of a certain alto saxophone solo by a certain 15 year old Nigel Hitchcock. This was also issued on CD, times are a’changing!

 1988

1988 London Weekend Television invited NYJO to perform ‘The Portraits Suite’ in an informal concert at the famous South bank

Television centre. ‘Portraits’ composer Harry South MDs and Jack Pennington draws!

1990 A New Look!

British Gas step up the sponsorship stakes in 1990 with a big Launch at a South Kensington Roof Garden. And the stands get a makeover with a new logo! Curiously the NYJO typo/pictogram logo used on two of the CDs never made it onto the stands. But it was clear a less whimsical more corporate look was needed.  This one didn’t rely on colour and manages to combine NYJO and National Youth Jazz Orchestra in one design.

1990 also sees the release of another remarkable concept album featuring a suite from Paul Hart. This was originally commissioned and dedicated for a recently departed husband, but as we’ll see, this suite over time grew with movements dedicated to NYJO players who died before their time, most poignantly the movement ‘For Richard’ which is dedicated to Richard Symons, himself the featured soloist in this first version.

1991

NYJO had been doing a stint at Ronnie Scott’s each year, usually in the summer. This was another opportunity to record the band live and ‘In Control’ a play on British Gas’ advertising slogan at the time was the first NYJO issue on the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz House label

NYJO at Ruislip Golf Club, West London. This was (and still is) a jazz venue and for many years NYJO had a regular fixture there.
