Tommy Laurence

Tommy LaurenceTommy occupied the alto sax chair in NYJO from 2002/09 and, from a very early stage, was writing and arranging charts for the band – one of the first that was played was something he’d written for his music A-level.

He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating as a saxophonist from its jazz course in 2008.

Since leaving NYJO he has become an in-demand arranger/orchestrator, undertaking several projects for the BBC Big Band, featuring a wide variety of artists such as Mica Paris and Paul Carrack, as well as projects for the SWR Big Band in Stuttgart.

He has written arrangements and orchestrations for the BBC Concert Orchestra, and contributed arrangements to various orchestra libraries. Tommy has also contributed string/horn arrangements and takedowns for various album projects and TV shows recorded in London and worked as an assistant orchestrator on a number of film projects.

In January 2014, Tommy had the honour of being engaged to transcribe and adapt the classic album Jarreau for Al Jarreau’s shows at Ronnie Scott’s, featuring an all-star 12 piece band, to celebrate the album’s 30th anniversary.

Later in the year he arranged, orchestrated and recorded In Love Again, his own album of standards, featuring a 55-piece orchestra, a big band and vocalists, as an homage to some of Tommy’s arranging heroes. The album features a multitude of NYJO alumni from across the ages, including Frank Ricotti, Jamie Talbot, Dave Arch, Annabel Williams, Tom Walsh, Andy Greenwood, Louis Dowdeswell, Mark Nightingale, Robby Harvey, Sammy Mayne, Andy Panayi and Claire McInerney.
