Some words from Parliamentary Jazz Award 'Best Newcomer' 2014 Phil Meadows

Following Tuesday night’s award ceremony at the Palace of Westminster, NYJO London MD (& former NYJO lead alto sax) Phil Meadows wrote to us with a few words about his Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Newcomer.

Some words from Parliamentary Jazz Award 'Best Newcomer' 2014 Phil Meadows‘It came as such a surprise to be awarded ‘Jazz Newcomer of the Year’. I was up against two brilliant musicians with Reuben Fowler and Lauren Kinsella also nominated. I can’t thank those who voted enough for making it possible and a special thank you has to go to my band; Laura Jurd, Elliot Galvin, Conor Chaplin and Simon Roth who’s musical brilliance brings the music I write to life in ways I never thought possible – this is most definitely a joint award! Having spent two and a half years as lead alto in NYJO as well as continuing my role as musical director for NYJO London I have to thank Nigel Tully and the board, everyone in the office and musical director Mark Armstrong for their continued support in my musical development. Special thanks goes to vice-chairman Jack Fallow who has not only helped my development inside of NYJO but offers help and advice with everything I do outside too, his support is invaluable!

After releasing ‘Engines of Creation’ last year I’m now very excited to get back into the studio with the Phil Meadows Group in July to record a new album of music with the brand new Engines Orchestra. We’re going to be releasing that in November bringing 26 of my favourite musicians together!’
