Sebastiaan de Krom is the new MD of the NYJO Academy Big BandRenowned drummer Sebastiaan de Krom has recently been appointed Music Director of the NYJO Academy Big Band, replacing Paul Eshelby, who retired at the end of last year.

Seb was brought up in Holland and later Belgium, moving to Boston in the USA when he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music. After five years he graduated cum laude with a dual degree from BCM, and afterwards went on to study for a Masters Degree at New England Conservatory.

In 1995 he won the prestigious Buddy Rich Award and from 1997 to 1999 was the drummer for the renowned Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Performance programme.

He has performed with artists such as Herbie Hancock and John Scofield, and between 2001/8 played drums as part of Jamie Cullum’s regular touring and recording rhythm section.

Executive Chair of NYJO, Nigel Tully said after the recruitment process: “Seb certainly knows his big bands, he was a very impressive applicant! He is a great acquisition for NYJO.”
