Rob Barron

Rob BarronRob grew up in East Yorkshire and studied at the Leeds College of Music, where he won the prize for outstanding performance on the BA Hons degree programme before moving to London to study for a Masters in Music Performance at the Guildhall School of Music.

He occupied the piano chair in NYJO from 2003/10, since when he has gained a reputation as being one of the most creative and versatile pianists of his generation.

A jazz specialist, Rob has worked with US stars Al Jarreau, Marlena Shaw, Bob Mintzer, Phil Woods and Benny Golson and has recorded with MOBO award winning band Kairos Quartet, featuring on their debut album.

In 2012 Rob composed for, and recorded on, piano and harmonium on Baz Lurhman’s Oscar-winning adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. He also performed in the house band at the closing ceremony of the Paralympics and worked with English National Ballet on their production of Strictly Gershwin, featuring the music of the eponymous composer, touring across the UK with a 50-piece orchestra for the show’s sell-out three month run.

As a session musician Rob has worked both live and in the studio with Bryan Adams, Damon Albarn, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Vanessa Mae, Russell Watson, Paul Brady, Nadine Coyle, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, trhe Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera and the BBC Big Band, and is also a regular member of the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra.
