Tom Gardener, the promising young trumpeter currently blowing up a quiet storm in the NYJO Academy Big Band, assembled a rhythm section to accompany U.S trumpet legend Bobby Shew at a ‘trumpet party’ and workshop at Prozone brass retailers last Saturday.
NYJO MD Mark Armstrong took the current NYJO trumpet section along for the session with the sage and it has been reported that much wisdom and inspiration was imparted to all present.
Bobby has played lead trumpet with the orchestras of Tommy Dorsey, Buddy Rich and Woody Herman, featured on countless sessions in the L.A studios with the likes of Elvis Presley and Chaka Khan, and as a jazz soloist, Bobby has played with Horace Silver and Maynard Ferguson amongst others. He cites Blue Mitchell as his all time trumpet hero and close friend.
In recent years he has dedicated himself to nurturing the next generation of players as an inspirational and methodical educator.
