NYJO makes its debut at the Vortex

NYJO makes its debut at the VortexSunday 26th February sees the start of NYJO’s new monthly Sunday afternoon residency at the renowned Vortex Jazz Club in Stoke Newington.

Established for over 20 years, the club is a beacon for contemporary jazz in the capital, placing strong emphasis on – and providing welcome support for – young local talent.

The Vortex also regularly features leading world-class artists, both from the UK and overseas – its diverse programming policy is designed to appeal to a wide range of musical tastes: straight-ahead, big-band, contemporary, piano trio, vocal, free-improvisation, world-music, Gypsy/East European and folk-orientated.

Many UK jazz luminaries – Stan Tracey, Tony Kofi, Evan Parker, Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine – Mercury Music Prize Nominated Polar Bear and Zoe Rahmann, John Taylor and Gwilym Simcock – award-winning saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock – have appeared on the club’s famous stage.

And now NYJO can be added to that illustrious list – with the band set to perform a range of contemporary works by leading UK jazz composers, originals by band members and music from the established canon of great big band jazz writing.

This monthly residency allows NYJO to showcase some of the finest young jazz musicians in the UK in a setting that befits their tremendous talent. Each session will be followed by an open jam – led by NYJO musicians playing host to guest musicians dropping in from across the London jazz scene.
