At the request of the BBC the NYJO Nonet will be playing on Radio 3’s In Tune programme on Friday 13th July – in a broadcast live from the Royal College of Music to mark the Opening Night of the Proms – offering NYJO a unique opportunity to preview its landmark appearance at the Proms on the 10th August.

NYJO helps launch the 2012 PromsRespected for its eclectic programming and informative reviews, In Tune will profile many luminaries featuring in this year’s Prom series, including interviews with three of the four classical conductors participating in the Opening Night – Martyn Brabbins, Sir Mark Elder and Edward Gardner – and NYJO’s Music and Artistic Director Mark Armstrong (left).

Mark will also be leading the NYJO Nonet the only band to be appearing on the programme – which will be playing three five-minute pieces: Lady Be Good, Tom Stone’s Return Flight and Feelin’ Good, with Jessica Dowdeswell on vocals.

With a major theme of this year’s Proms focusing on Youth, NYJO’s participation in the In Tune programme serves to highlight NYJO’s role as the leading national and cultural institution for aspiring young jazz musicians and the recognition it is now receiving from major arts organisations.

NYJO’s appearance on In Tune presages the band’s participation in Prom 38 on the 10th August which, as well as being broadcast live that evening on Radio3, is also being televised for broadcast the following week on BBC4.

The involvement of composer and saxophonist Tim Garland and drummer Mark Mondesir in the Proms concert has helped elevate NYJO’s artistry to new heights, expanding the breadth of the musicians’ experience and encouraging their own creativity. It is also testament to the tireless energy committed to NYJO by a diverse group of musicians, educators and believers, all of whom are proud to have helped establish NYJO as the nation’s premier youth jazz orchestra.
