NYJO Family Celebrate Success at Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2020

NYJO saw a host of familiar names as the winners for the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2020 were confirmed on Tuesday, 30th June.

The winners include several newcomers including our very own Luca Manning, who received the Jazz Newcomer of the Year shortly after a wonderful stint with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. We were also thrilled to see Nikki Iles pick up the prize for Jazz Ensemble of the Year.

Due to be released later this year, both Nikki and Luca were involved in the recording of our album ‘She Said’ back in September 2019. Recorded at Air Studios, this album is a celebration of women’s invaluable contributions to UK jazz through performance and education and will showcase the talents of a unique collection of musicians, each with their own distinct viewpoints on jazz for large ensembles.

The nomination list featured a host of names that we have been fortunate enough to work with over the years. We’d like to congratulate all of the NYJO Alumni who made the list for 2020, including Rob Luft (Best Jazz Instrumentalist), Rosina Bullen (Best Newcomer), Alexandra Ridout (Best Newcomer) and Bonsai band-members: Rory Ingham and Jonny Mansfield (Best Newcomer).

I’m thrilled to have been nominated for this award along with some other fantastic musicians and friends. This means a lot to me and I look forward to when we can all play again soon!

The Parliamentary Awards celebrate and recognise the vibrancy, diversity, talent and breadth of the jazz scene throughout the United Kingdom. The awards have been running since 2005. The All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG) currently has over 116 members from the House of Commons and House of Lords across all political parties.

On behalf of Bonsai, we’re truly honoured to be nominated in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards, in tremendous company with some of our musical heroes and friends! We would love to thank all who have supported Bonsai so far. It was through the “Three Nations Under One Groove” tour with Bujazzo, NJJO and NYJO that I had the confidence to set up Bonsai’s first European tour. NYJO have in fact been instrumental in our journey thus far; acting as a springboard to enable Bonsai to engage with promoters, press, and other industry professionals within performing and education.
