The National Youth Orchestra, for so long the breeding ground for the cream of young British jazz artists, and Trevor James instruments, a British leader in the design and manufacture of saxophones and flutes, announced today that they have entered into a unique collaboration to support the vibrant and energetic NYJO Academy with £30,000 of award winning instruments.
This educational partnership will enable the team behind Trevor James instruments to form positive liaisons with and receive feedback from the wonderful Jazz musicians of NYJO, while supporting the development of future talent through the NYJO Academy. This will provide a unique opportunity for an award winning British Instrument Company to make a positive contribution to jazz education here in the UK.
The shopping list of 10 saxophones and 5 flutes was chosen by NYJO saxophonists Phil Meadows and Riley Stone-Lonergan. Phil Meadows (also Music Director of NYJO London, one of the training ensembles of the NYJO Academy) said “It was a real pleasure to spend a few hours choosing the instruments from the Trevor James range. They are fantastic instruments for young musicians at this level and NYJO Academy members are hugely excited about their arrival!”
Commenting on the new relationship Nigel Tully, NYJO Executive Chair said “This has all the signs of being a truly wonderful partnership. This generous gift will provide a valuable resource for younger musicians in the training bands of the NYJO Academy, many of whom are in pressing need of regular use of reliable instruments. Furthermore, we hope the feedback on the instruments and insight on the demands of their use will prove enormously useful to Worldwind. It’s rare to find such a synergy in a commercial partnership and we look forward immensely to working together.”
Christopher Howe, CEO of Worldwind Music – the home of Trevor James instruments – said “This partnership between NYJO and Trevor James Instruments will create exciting opportunities for the budding jazz musicians of NYJO, whilst giving the team here at Worldwind Music an informed and practical insight into the world of the emerging jazz musicians of tomorrow. We believe that, as a British musical instrument company, it is our corporate social responsibility to support music here in all forms of education and instrumental learning, and we are looking forward to supporting the wonderful contribution that NYJO dedicate to making jazz more widely available to all”.
