NYJO partner up with Deal Music & Arts to produce digital content for their online activity, set to commence this November. These recordings were NYJO’s first physical event since lockdown began back in March.
For the past four years, we have loved working with Deal Music & Arts as part of our Learning & Participation programme. In many cases DMA is the sole provider of arts learning to those is the surrounding area. It’s important to us that we find national partners that clearly care about keeping music alive in their local community, and with the DMA team we’ve done just that.
Due to the pandemic, arts learning has been put even further out of reach for young people, and they can also be entirely reliant on their school’s ethos toward the arts. We’re hopeful that projects like these provide support to those who might otherwise find it very difficult to connect with others via their love of playing music.
Special thanks to Joe Browne (Musical Director of Jazz Journey & NYJO Associate Educator) for putting together such a great project with the rest of the DMA team. We can’t wait to see how it all looks come November!
Deal Music & Arts are also offering online mentoring for small groups, so please contact them directly if you’d like to get involved. DMA will also utilise NYJO’s digital resources from our ever-expanding Virtual Academy to keep supporting all aspiring jazz musicians in Deal and the surrounding areas.
We’ll update you all this November when the material goes live!
JAZZ JOURNEY is a Deal Music & Arts education project that focuses on jazz music education in Kent. It provides an opportunity for musicians of all ages and backgrounds to work and perform alongside world-class jazz musician mentors.
Deal Music & Arts offers the only jazz education programme in Kent, offering a range of in-school workshops and ‘Creative Jazz Orchestra’ weekends, public concerts and small ensemble mentoring and performance opportunities. It provides an opportunity for secondary school students to work and perform alongside world-class jazz musician mentors. Working in partnership with NYJO and Ronnie Scott’s.
The activities as part of JAZZ JOURNEY encourage musicians of all ages to engage creatively with jazz music, with the genre acting as an accessible entry point into musical composition and developing new musical techniques. The primary aim is to introduce and develop specific musical skills that would have previously been unfamiliar or inaccessible to young people. By encouraging the participants to explore alternative ways of making music, such as improvisation, group composition, musical interaction and responding to existing repertoire within the jazz idiom, they hope to broaden, not only their musical outlook, but their ability to adapt, improvise and respond appropriately to various educational and social challenges.
