Jon Russell

Jon RussellJon first began playing the guitar at the age of 10, studying both classical and electric instruments during his formative years. By 13 he was already performing regularly in local rock bands and in 1998 was a finalist in Guitarist magazine’s Young Guitarist of the Year.

He went on to study jazz at Middlesex University, graduating in 2006 with first-class honours. Whilst there, he received tuition from guitarists Mike Outram and Carl Orr.

He held the guitar chair in NYJO from 2007/10 and, during his time there, played with artists such as Buddy Greco, Sir John Dankworth, Norma Winstone and Stan Sulzmann. He is featured on NYJO’s album When You’re Ready, recorded live at Ronnie Scott’s in 2008.

He has also performed with numerous other jazz orchestras including Jay Craig’s Orchestra, the Sinatra Live at the Sands tribute, the Callum Au Big Band and Henry Armburg-Jennings’ Big Band. Other artists he has played with include Pop Idol finalist Darius Campbell and Newton Faulkner.

He has also performed in various musical theatre productions and West End shows.
