Helen is a gifted flautist with both classical and jazz musical interests. She has toured with the F-IRE (Fellowship for Integrated Rhythmic Expression) Collective, alongside Barak Schmool, Ingrid Laubrock, Tom Arthurs and Nick Ramm, and held the flute chair with NYJO between 2009/13.
As an orchestral player, Helen has worked with the BBC Philharmonic, Sinfonia Cymru, Malmo Chamber Orchestra (Sweden), in the orchestra for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera official UK tour, and is an extra for the Hallé Orchestra.
She has also played in the European Union Youth Orchestra and been Principal flute in the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, and the London-based Odyssey Orchestra. In 2011 Helen was selected after national auditions to take part in the LSO Woodwind Orchestral Academy where she spent a week learning from the principals of the London Symphony Orchestra woodwind section.
Helen studied flute with Gitte Marcusson at Chetham’s School of Music and Richard Davis (BBC Philharmonic, Principal flute) at the Royal Northern College of Music, graduating with an MMus (Distinction) in 2013. She also received tuition from Katherine Baker (Hallé), Peter Lloyd and Dr Anders Ljungar-Chapelon.
As a soloist, Helen has won the Harriet Cohen Award, a Musicians Benevolent Fund Postgraduate Award, a Countess of Munster Postgraduate Award and the Tim Reynish Award. At the RNCM she won their 2008 Woodwind Soloist competition and the 2009 Gold Medal and Concerto competition.
She was also Woodwind finalist in the 2006 BBC Young Musician of the Year and won the 2007 British Flute Society Performance Plus Competition. As a recital and concerto soloist she has performed in venues including the Purcell Room and Wigmore Hall.
Helen is the founder of Tempest, an award-winning flute trio which, in 2011, won the Nonclassical Battle of the Bands competition resulting in an album deal on the Nonclassical label. Tempest’s other successes include winning the 2013 Royal Over-Seas League Chamber Music competition and Second Prize in the 15th International Kuhlau Flute Competition. After auditions, the trio was selected as artists for the 2013 Park Lane Group Concert Series and the 2013/14 Manchester Midday Concert Society.
