Darren has been playing the drums since the age of 13 and followed the familiar route of school bands and local orchestras. With a passion for jazz and big band music, Darren attended NYJO rehearsals and went on to occupy the drum chair from 1997 to 2003.
From 1995 to 2000 Darren studied under Bob Armstrong – whose past pupils including Steve and Alan White, Andy Gangadeen and a long list of other incredible drummers – before undertaking further study with Dave Hassell to study for an Honours Degree in Jazz, from which he graduated with a First in 2001.
Darren is a very active freelance musician and has recorded with Kylie Minogue and for EMI, Sony and Universal records. His extensive live experience includes playing at Ronnie Scott’s, the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Concert Orchestra, and with the BBC Big Band and the Syd Lawrence Orchestra.
Over the last few years Darren has played many different types of gigs, ranging from West End shows, orchestras, jazz trios, support slots with Jamie Cullum and Will Young to jingles and performances on TV and radio.
His other interest is teaching and, after teaching privately for 20 years, Darren set up The Drum Den Studio in Harpenden in 2012 with a view to passing on his experience and passion for music and drumming to the next generation of budding young drummers in the best environment possible. In addition, his studio is able to provide high quality drum and instrument tracks commercially as well as mixing and mastering online services for any type of musical project.
