Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony 2019: UK Students Announced

As the Brubeck Institute’s UK partner, NYJO is delighted to announce that following a competitive audition, three talented young musicians from the UK have been selected to take part in this year’s Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony in Stockton, California. The chosen students are:

Lester Ridout – Drums

Jack Ross – Trumpet

Harry Mercer – Guitar

The Summer Jazz Colony is a one-week, intensive jazz summer school for exceptionally talented students aged 16-19. They are selected by video audition from the UK, United States, Australia and beyond to study with Brubeck Institute faculty, guest artists and tutors. They will spend their week enjoying combo rehearsals, masterclasses, private instruction, classes in jazz theory & advanced jazz improvisation, and seminars on the music of Dave Brubeck & other topics. Colonists will participate in numerous jam sessions, and perform in an end-of-course concert. NYJO also contributes a UK tutor to the Summer Jazz Colony, which this year will be NYJO’s very own Artistic and Music Director, trumpeter Mark Armstrong.

All of our UK students have to fundraise towards their place at the colony, with many choosing to crowdfund, put on fundraising gigs and more. Keep your eye out on NYJO social media in the coming weeks for links to all of the colonists’ fundraising pages if you want to help them make the most of this terrific opportunity. You can also find links to each of their individual crowdfunding pages on their names above.

Congratulations Lester, Jack and Harry, and thanks to everyone who auditioned – the competition was fierce as always! Keep your eyes peeled for news of how they got on when they return from the colony in August.
