BBC Young Musician Jazz Award won by saxophonist Alexander Bone

Saxophonist and NYJO attendee Alexander Bone (17) has won the very first BBC Young Musician Jazz Award. The final was held on Saturday 8 March at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with five finalists performing  a set each with the Gwilym Simcock Trio. Hosted by Soweto Kinch, the judging panel were Django Bates, Trish Clowes, Julian Joseph and Jason Yarde. The other finalists  were saxophonist Sean Payne, trumpeter Jake Labazzi, saxophonist Tom Smith and bassist Freddie Jensen with Jake and Sean both having attended NYJO. Huge congratulations to Alexander and the other finalists and we look forward to following all their careers! A programme about the competition will be broadcast on BBC4 TV on 23 May 2014.
