Asha Parkinson Wins The Robert Lewin Scholarship

Asha Parkinson Wins The Robert Lewin ScholarshipNYJO2 alto and soprano saxophonist Asha Parkinson, aged 12, has won the £1000 Robert Lewin Scholarship from the Awards for Young Musicians, following an audition in London.

The award means a great deal to Asha, quite apart from the financial boost. Almost two years ago she partially severed the median nerve in her left arm in an accident and was advised that there was a chance of permanent paralysis. In the event, however, sheer determination – and good plastic surgery! – plus the unique support and inspiration of NYJO has helped speed her recovery.

Asha has been learning the saxophone for two and a half years, gaining 95% in her Grade 8 jazz alto sax exam in March 2012; she is currently taking Grade 8 classical piano.

Describing winning the scholarship award as “…just amazing!”,  is putting the prize money towards the purchase of a tenor saxophone.
