Esteemed publication Music Teacher Magazine has a feature on the new NYJO Academy in the April 2013 issue. Music Teacher Magazine is the go-to place for music education news, developments and resources. In the feature, NYJO chairman Nigel Tully explained that “under the banner of the NYJO Academy we will now have three bands and a vocal workshop taking place on a weekly basis. The NYJO Academy will offer involvement to those just starting out in jazz up to those beginning to consider a career in it. And the older band, NYJO, will continue to remain the aspirational pinnacle”.
The journalist, Rhian Morgan, noted that in spite of its successes and a proud legacy of thousands of young musicians who have enlisted over the years, funding remains a worry. Nigel goes on to say that “we must constantly work to raise charitable income. It’s hard for classical organisations, but we suspect it is even harder for those working within jazz education which doesn’t yet have a substantial history of giving.”
