Stage 1:  Application and video

  1. Complete the NYJO 2020 Application Form
  2. Complete the Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form
  3. Record your audition video in line with the below guidelines and upload to YouTube (as unlisted or private if you prefer – as long as you can give us access to it!). Please check that your link works before sending it
  4. Email your two forms (saved as Word or PDF files only) and a video link (including telling us the timecode we should navigate to, if not the beginning) to Orchestra Manager Roger Wilson at: roger@nyjo.org.uk by 10am Monday 21 October

What we need to see

  • Tell us about your performance experience, what inspires you, and why you’re interested in singing with NYJO
  • Make sure you tell us about any specific skills and experience you have relating to large jazz ensembles
  • Tell us about other instruments you play, even if they’re not an obvious double for your primary instrument

  • 3-5 minutes of you performing some music that demonstrates your singing style and ability, as appropriate for a big band context
  • If part of a longer video performance please indicate the timing of the sections you wish to be heard
  • Original and jazz standard material is acceptable and you can accompany yourself, or use a backing track or backing band. Your performance can consist of song performance, vocalise and improvisation or a combination of all three
  • Send us your video as a LINK to a YouTube video. If you prefer, you can upload the video so it’s unlisted, i.e. we can see it by clicking the link, but the public won’t find it
  • You needn’t record something specially. If a recording of you already exists that you think is suitable, it’s fine to reuse it. If your part starts mid-way through the video, just tell us in the cover email where in the video to navigate

Stage 2:  AUDITION

Following the first stage, successful applicants will be invited to an audition at a rehearsal with NYJO in London (date to be confirmed). Travel bursaries are available for anyone travelling from outside the M25.

  • Each audition will be 20 minutes long
  • You may bring your own copy of a big band chart to sing through with the band or choose a song from a list that will be provided to you when invited to audition. Choose a piece that showcases your strengths – whether this is a song, vocalise, improvisation or a combination
  • You will also receive some notated quick study music shortly before the rehearsal day that you will be expected to sing with the band
  • The panel will speak to you briefly about your what inspires you as a musician, your musical goals and your playing experience
