Since 1965, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra has sought to provide aspiring young jazz musicians with the opportunity to rehearse and perform big band jazz to the highest standard. The weekly rehearsals have taken place unfailingly since then and nurtured the careers of many of Britain’s best-loved and well-known jazz musicians.
The charity now operates four orchestras. NYJO is the main performing band. The NYJO Academy encompasses the main educational work and contains the NYJO Academy Big Band, the NYJO Jazz Ensemble, NYJO London and the NYJO Academy Vocal Workshop. All of which rehearse every Saturday. The vocal workshop famously launched Amy Winehouse’s gigging career.
As NYJO approaches its 50th anniversary, thousands of young musicians have enlisted over the years with around 300 young musicians currently benefitting from the unique learning experience the organisation offers. None of this activity would be possible without the support and financial input of our wide circle of friends and donors, many of whom, like us, hope to carve a greater role for jazz in the current landscape of music education.
There are various options to help support NYJO and enjoy a range of benefits:
£2.50 per month or £30 per annum
£5 per month or £60 per annum
As Friend plus Music Director’s annual report
£10 per month or £120 per annum
As Bronze plus invitation to attend rehearsals, name credited on website and free copy of the latest CD
£25 per month or £300 per annum
As Silver plus acknowledgement in special programmes and invitation to the annual Chairman’s Reception
