Scott Chapman
Year of birth: 1991
Scott began playing with NYJO 2 before working his way through the ranks to the NYJO 1 percussion chair, and at 15 took over from James Maddren as the main drummer. He is currently finishing his A-levels at Watford Grammar School for Boys and will be studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music as from September 2010.
Upon finding he could beat time to a piece of music at just 18 months old, Scott's parents encouraged him to play music and at aged 8 he started playing drums. In 2007 and 2008 he was one of 10 finalists in Young Drummer of the Year.
He also plays vibraphone and most other tuned and non tuned percussion, covering a wide range of styles. Scott therefore finds himself playing in classical situations from time to time, as well as regular small and big band work. His ability as a competent percussionist led him to perform with the Wally Fields Jazz Orchestra at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, alongside renowned pianist and musical director of Ronnie Scott's, James Pearson, as well as Mike Smith, Pete Long and Mark Armstrong to name a few.
Scott looks forward to spending his 4 years at the Royal Academy and taking on more playing opportunities in the near future.
