The NYJO Academy, offers weekly London-based access to jazz ensembles for young musicians of varying levels and abilities. On Saturday’s during term times, the following bands rehearse:
- The NYJO Academy Jazz Ensemble. 10am – 1pm MD: Gemma Buckenham.
Focuses on ensemble performance skills in a large jazz ensemble: an introduction to standard big band repertoire, interpreting notation, familiarity with a variety of grooves from jazz and related genres and jazz improvisation. Guideline: Approximate standard ABRSM classical grades 4-6 or jazz grades 3-5. Approximate age range: 12 – 17
- The NYJO Academy Big Band. 10am – 1pm MD: Sebastiaan de Krom.
This band focuses on projects looking at the repertoire/styles of key big band figures; Ellington, Basie, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Stan Tracey etc etc. Experience in large jazz ensemble performance is expected, with music reading, improvisational abilities and overall jazz style developing well. Entry is mainly by a yearly audition process – more details here. Guideline: Approximate age range 16-19
- The NYJO Academy Vocal Workshop. 10am -1pm MD: Jessica Radcliffe
Singers work with the MD on everything from microphone technique to repertoire and reading and jazz interpretation. Each week members of the vocal class will have opportunity to sing with the instrumental ensembles, as well as working on a jazz vocal ensemble. Guideline: Some live singing experience desirable. Approximate age range 14 – 21
- NYJO London. 2:00pm – 4:00pm MD: Phil Meadows
This ensemble focuses on the aural tradition of jazz – learning music pieces by ear, creating arrangements and improvisation skills. Guideline: Some proficiency on your instrument. Approximate age range: under 19.

How much does it cost?
NYJO Academy Big Band/Jazz Ensemble/Vocal Class = £100 per term
NYJO London = £70 per term
NYJO London + morning session = £150 per term.

How to Join
You can join ensembles at the start of every term (Entry to the NYJO Academy Big Band is by annual audition). You’re also very welcome to come along for a free taster session at any point. Before attending for the first time, please fill out a registration form. You can find a registration form here
