This is not a comment, 'tis a message! Back in the dim and distant 1990's I was MD of John Smedley and for several years produced some NYJO CDs in conjunction with Bill Ashton that we distributed to our many customers around the World. I am just clearing out my loft and have found a cake of about 50 of an album entitled Ultra Modern Classic. This included numbers such as Hatfield Tunnel, Castles in Spain, Cakes. Have you any use for these or is to the tip with them? Hope all going well and best wishes to Bill

Superb concert at the Lighthouse, Poole last night. On behalf of us locals I can only apologise for the criminally small audience, but in our defence local publicity was very poor. What a treat missed by other jazz lovers.

Glad you enjoyed it! The piece is 'He's just my Bill' by Jerome Kern arranged by NYJO alumnus trombonist Mark Nightingale. It's not been recorded by NYJO.

Really enjoyed the concert in Tunbridge Wells last night, hope you all made the last train home!

Can you let me know the title of the piece you did with five trombones and if it is on a recording anywhere.

Many thanks.

Hi John,

thanks for your comments. However, I must disagree with some of what you say. Firstly, the BBC Proms commissioned Tim Garland to write a brand new composition for the band, something which was very exciting for us. We didn't perform any suites, though we did perform a piece from a suite by Kenny Wheeler, which is only unknown if you're not familiar with Kenny Wheeler. Whilst to tap your foot, or any other part of the body you see fit, to a driving swing rhythm is one of lifes great experiences, partof NYJO's mission is to present some of the breadth of contemporary jazz music, not all which has the swing feel as its essence.

As for an opprtunity missed, you'll be pleased to hear that the audience on the night was one of, if not the largest, for a late night prom this year and that, combined with our radio broadcast and TV appearance, certainly constitutes one of the largest audiences for NYJO ever and probably one of the largest this year for any UK jazz big band.

In addition to this, our landmark album The Change has been flying off our shelves like the proverbial hot cakes despite not being officially released until 24th September and I suspect that is somewhat related to the opportunity presented, and taken by NYJO at the Proms.
