Will Lewis-Smith

Having achieved three A grades at A level, I am enjoying my first year at Pembroke College, Cambridge as a music student. I am working on my LRSM Performance Diploma in Percussion and am looking to do the same in Piano – when time allows it. I enjoy playing piano/vibes in small-group classical and jazz contexts. I am looking to conduct my College Orchestra next term and also hope to do well in the University’s conducting trials next year.

Sarah Makin

I play tenor/alto/baritone saxes and flute and clarinet. My principle instrument being clarinet which I feature predominantly in my own quartet playing pub and restaurant venues.I am a member of three big bands ,playing saxes in the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire areas.I also regularly guest in a number of jazz quartets in the Beds/Herts and London areas.

Ted Rockley

Ted has been a NYJO band member on Alto from 1968- 1971. He’s now on the NYJO board as a trustee (since 1989).
Ted’s professional career is in graphic design animation after leaving Hornsey College of Art (now Middlesex University) he formed Klactoveesedstene Animations Ltd with Oscar Grillo in 1981, producing animated commercials some with soundtracks by NYJO alumni Paul Hart, Dick Walter and Mike Page.

Gill Burgoyne

My parents shared their love of Big Band music with my older brother and I from an early age, and I was hooked on recordings of Stan Kenton,Woody Herman and Jimmy Dorsey. Presented with the opportunity to learn the clarinet aged 9, I applied myself to the classical charts.

Scott Chapman

Scott began playing with NYJO 2 before working his way through the ranks to the NYJO 1 percussion chair, and at 15 took over from James Maddren as the main drummer. He is currently finishing his A-levels at Watford Grammar School for Boys and will be studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music as from September 2010.

Simon Purcell

Simon Purcell, jazz musician and educator, best known as Head of Jazz at Trinity College of Music and member of the Pop and Jazz Steering Group for the Association of European Conservatoires. Still active as a performer, he has appeared with Red Rodney, Kenny Wheeler, Eddie Henderson, Stan Sulzman, Jean Toussaint and Julian Arguelles. His current quintet features Julian Siegel, Chris Batchelor and Gene Calderazzo.
